Project W.A.R.M. (Roanoke Valley)

Est. 1996

Local Church of the Brethren congregations  have been working with the City of Salem and The Salvation Army since 1996, to provide free firewood for their less fortunate neighbors in the Roanoke Valley. Patterned after the original (founded in Richmond, VA in 1976) Project W.A.R.M. (Wood Association of Roanoke Metro) operates out of a secure lot at 1231 Indiana Street, provided by Salem City’s Street and Maintenance Department. Salem City also provides heavy equipment, woodlot maintenance and raw materials for firewood.

The Church of the Brethren congregations are organized into four groups that work one of every four weeks.  Their volunteers split wood year round and deliver it in the winter. The Salvation Army carefully screens applicants for wood and maintains the list of qualified recipients. As families need wood, they contact The Salvation Army and are added to our weekly delivery list.

Don't Be Left Out In The Cold!

Project W.A.R.M. has provided more than 2,100 truckloads of firewood since we began in Roanoke nine years ago. If you, or someone you know, is in need of firewood, call The Salvation Army at 540-343-5335. For procedural or other information, contact Marc Wilson at  marcwilson@onemain.com.

In the fall, we split wood every Tuesday  evening starting at 5:00 p.m. and  Saturday mornings at 8:00—–weather permitting.

Located at 1231 Indiana Street, Salem, Virginia

We Deliver

When delivery season begins in November, volunteers arrive at the wood lot on Saturday mornings between 7:30--8:00 a.m. and are given assignments, (family's name, address) and directions. A minimum of six pick-up trucks and a dozen volunteers is needed. Deliveries are normally completed between 10:00--11:00 a.m., depending on the number, trucks available and weather conditions.

We encourage supervised children and youth to help deliver wood. Children as young as three years old have gone on deliveries and it's been a very positive experience for everyone.

Project W.A.R.M. has won state and international awards.
